How Do I Get Started?
You may contact a Registered Apprenticeship Program Consultant here. Your Program Consultant will:
-
Provide you with an overview of Registered Apprenticeship.
-
Review Federal Regulations (Title 29 CFR Part 29--Labor Standards for Registration) to ensure compliance.
-
Provide guidance throughout the process of developing your Registered Apprenticeship program. It may be helpful for you to begin thinking about some key issues to ensure the program is customized to best meet your training needs. Your Program Consultant will ask you to provide input with the following steps of the start-up process:
-
Identify an occupation for which you have a training need.
Your Program Consultant will be able to tell you if the occupation is already recognized as eligible for Registered Apprenticeship or if you can pursue a new career program. You may also check the USDOL List of Apprenticeable Occupations.
-
Determine the knowledge and skills needed for the occupation(s) in the program.
Your Program Consultant will be able to tell you if there are existing models that might assist with this process. If you are interested in more than one occupation, you will need to develop the outlines for each career path.
-
Tour facility and discuss appropriate training needs, including the provision for ongoing safety training.
-
Determine what qualifications applicants will need to enter your program.
-
Identify those who will provide supervision and direction to registered apprentices on the job.
-
Assist in identifying a provider for the Related Technical Instruction component of your program for each occupation. This instruction is often provided by a community or technical college, online instruction, correspondence or apprenticeship training center.
-
Identify an individual that will maintain the standards of training as identified. This may include confirming length of training, handling the selection procedure and administration of any tests of competencies.
-
Prepare the Standards of Apprenticeship, including the Work Processes and Related Technical Instruction, based upon the above information. Your Program Consultant will assist you with this process.
